No tears of joy here

The house is empty but for a silent sob,

Tears that dare not echo in the silence.

She has not lived a life,

A prisoner to her captor,

Not behind bars,

That would have been much better, for with the breaking of the bars,

The opening of her prison doors, she would have been free,

When they met me, I was in tears.

“Alas,” my rescuers thought, “she knows not her freedom.”

I knew their presence could only be the absence of my master.

I cried not for freedom, but for the mirage of the next.

Her tears did not stop, even when we offered her food,

She was free now, or so we thought.

But her eyes told a different tale.

There was no light

Just the emptiness of someone broken.

Joy is an alien specie I was not meant to meet,

Hope is an endangered plant that was crushed under heavy heels

Freedom was never within reach,

Even when I was made free, I was not.

Not from the years of captivity.

These tears that stream down are salty, bitter

There are no tears of joy here.

  1. Hope is an endangered plant that was crushed under heavy heels

Favorite line – it just explains how it blends natural imagery with human violence to show how easily hope can be destroyed, but also highlights its resilience: even crushed, plants sometimes sprout back.

  2. ” This tears that stream down are salty bitter”.

    Amazing work of art A.J👌💕

Even at the sight of freedom, there are still a kind of barrier in between, never to be mistaken for a total freedom…. There are indeed no tears of Joy!
